Need to know:

Red Gum BBQ isn’t located in our immediate area but it really is worth the trip to Red Hill. The kid friendly atmosphere is paired with delicious slow cooked authentic American BBQ and southern sides. They offer a great mix of offerings on the menu, together with a range of craft beers on tap and Peninsula wines. Their menu is designed to be shared by ordering individual meats and sides.

This spacious venue offers a relaxing atmosphere, both inside and outside, for both children and adults. There is a great play area in the farthest corner inside that is suitable for most ages. The venue was once a truck mechanics workshop and now is great communal dining room with views of the pit room and is not a place to miss. The picnic style tables give you the opportunity to get cosy with your family and also meet new friends.

Red Gum’s story started long before opening their restaurant in 2017. Mr and Mrs Pitmaster (Martin and Melissa) started their slow cooking dream with a marquee and trailer in 2013 and worked hard to bring their own restaurant to life. Having children themselves, they understand the importance of family friendly offerings and no detail has been missed here.

They have space for prams, plenty of high chairs available, baby change facilities, colouring sheets and pencils, their fantastic play corner and run special events during school holidays for kids.

They definitely recommend booking ahead and to specify a table near the play area. They offer very prompt kitchen times, but suggest an early lunch or dinner if time is an issue. They offer take away, cater to dietary requirements and have a great function space.

Our latest visit:

When I started my directory, Red Gum BBQ was one of the first venues suggested to me, despite only asking for local venues. The suggestion kept coming and it’s easy to understand why. This is a destination not to be missed. When the opportunity for a visit to the area came, we jumped at it. It wasn’t about their kid friendly offerings for us. It was our love for American BBQ.

We headed in for an early dinner. We were promptly acknowledged and attended to!  I made it very clear that we were on a very tight schedule and this was not an issue for them at all. They pride themselves on prompt service and fast kitchen times. They were very happy to answer questions relating to my daughter’s dairy intolerance.

The kids had a bit of a play in their well equipped play area. I especially love that they have a play BBQ! Esther took an absolute liking to it. My husband and son absolutely loved getting up and close to the smokers. It really sets the ambience of the venue.

I always ask for recommendations and we were recommended a number of dishes, including the Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket and Broccoli Salad.  We decided on the St Bernard’s Free Range Pulled Pork (12 hours smoked pork shoulder with Red Gum BBQ’s Carolina finishing sauce), together with Mac & Cheese and their Broccoli Salad (Raw Broccoli, house cured bacon, almonds, sultanas and buttermilk dressing).

Food arrived very promptly before my son even had a chance to have a good wander around. We were also immediately served individual plates and plastic plates for the kids. The pulled pork was succulent and tender. The BBQ sauce was delicious and also enjoyed by my daughter. My mac & cheese loving son claimed it for himself and we were lucky to even have a taste. It was deliciously creamy. We also really enjoyed the broccoli salad and I’ll definitely be cooking a variation of this for my own kids at home! The buttermilk dressing finished it off beautifully. |

We wish we had more time, as we would have loved to have ordered more as we went along and try some of the desserts too. We were comfortably attended to and out the door within 40 minutes.  This venue really ticks all the boxes for us and we will return to work our way down the menu.

What they do well:

– A fantastic play area with a great selection of toys
– Authentic American BBQ
– Exceptional Service and great atmosphere
